Fall is here! I love this time of year! One of my favorite things is hosting our annual Chili Cook-Off. If you don't know how a chili cook-off works, everyone brings their own homemade chili, we put them in pots with labels that DON'T say who brought them, then we all taste test each chili. Everyone votes, and winners are chosen based on which chili we liked best.
To add a little more fun this year, I made these Chili Pot food markers for everyone’s chili for voting, and cute little awards for the winners. I would love to teach you how to make them. Let's grab some materials and get started!
Supplies:
- Cardstock Warehouse cardstock papers:
- Adhesives:
- Scissors
- Paper Trimmer & Scoring Tool
- Cricut Die Cutting Machine
Step 1: Cut Your Pieces
To begin, open the Design Space project linked above and make any adjustments you would like to make to the pieces. The layers on these are pretty simple, and I listed the paper colors I used in the supplies above. (One thing to note: I used 83 lb. White to cut out all of the white Cricut pieces, and used the 111 lb. White later on to hand-cut the tented cards for the back. More on that in Step 4 below.)
Cut all your pieces out and get them sorted and organized to make assembling much easier.
Step 2: Assemble Your Pots
Start the assembly by gluing the stock pot pieces. I dotted liquid glue in various places on the back of the shiny pot and adhered it to the white base. Then, glue the black details pieces (top, bottom of lid & handles) to the front of the pot.
*TIP: Be careful not to use too much glue when adhering to the mirror paper. Since it is a shiny surface, it does not absorb glue the way matte papers do, and if you use too much, it will squish out around the sides. If this happens, you can even use a VERY slightly damp paper towel wrapped over the tip of your finger to swipe the excess away.
I just love the look of the pot with the Gun Metal mirror cardstock… it makes it look so realistic!
Step 3: Add the Details
Now glue the red peppers together. The red layer goes on top of the green, and then that layer goes on top of the white. Once you have those all glued, you can either glue it or foam pop dot it for a 3D look, which is what I decided to do! I think using the foam adhesives gives it the perfect little extra something!
For the label part of the food marker, I decide to make them numbered for voting purposes, but you can title them however you like. I wanted to make the labels stand out, so I used foam tape on the back of the white label and adhered it to the black outline oval. Then I glued the label to the center of the pot.
Step 4: Add Tented Card Stands
Step Five: I made a free standing paper tent that I glued on the back of the pots so they can stand up on their own. To make them, I used my paper trimmer to cut a 4x4 inch square of white cardstock, then using my bone folder I scored the paper square in the middle. Fold the square and glue it on the back of the pot. Now you are ready to use your food markers!
Step 5: Make Your Awards
As an additional fun thing for the party, I bought three sizes of wooden spoons with holes in the handles and made cute awards ribbons for the winners of the cook-off. Since these are the same files and layering technique we already used, I'll leave you to put these together on your own. Don't forget to add foam tape between some of your layers to add some fun dimension! You could also add actual ribbons to the bottom for even more flair!
If you want to get really fancy, you can use these same images in Cricut and add some pennant shapes and make a cute banner to accompany your party setup. SO many possiblities!
