Every year, my daughter and I host a fun and festive Christmas DIY party. This year, we're excited to change things up with an ornament-making party! To add an extra special touch, I found this adorable ornament gift box from svgcuts.com, which will be perfect for our guests to take their creations home. Not only does it serve as a delightful keepsake, but it also makes a charming gift box for giving ornaments to loved ones. The ornament insert can also be excluded to create an adorable rectangular gift box that can hold any gift! Truly such a versatile project.
Before we dive into the steps, let’s gather all the necessary supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:

- Red

- Hot Glue
- Ribbon or Twine
- Scissors
- Acetate
- Cutting machine

The first thing we’ll do is get our files ready. I purchased my file from SVGCuts at the link above, and then imported it into my cutting machine. This file is for a box for big ball ornaments, but the ones I have are smaller, so I resized my box to make fit the smaller ornaments I want to put in it. If you want to resize your box as well, just make sure you have all of the pieces selected before you make it smaller so the proportions stay correct. If you’re using a Cricut like I am, you’ll also need to “attach” your score lines to their respective pieces before you cut.
I am using 100lb. Colorplan paper for my box because it is so nice and sturdy and will create a beautiful high quality box. I am also using some red and green mirror paper for the accents.
To start our assembly, we’ll make the main box. This section of the box is a simple rectangle. Fold along the score lines carefully to ensure crisp edges and accurate assembly. Then, attach the two side pieces to either side of the back piece to make one long piece that folds up into a rectangle.
The front of the box comes in two parts: one with a scored edge (the front) and another to cover the acetate. Glue a piece of acetate to the back of the front piece. This will create a clear window to display the ornament inside. Now glue the front of your box to the tabs on the sides of the box. Once your main rectangle is assembled, glue the piece with the oval cut out to the inside of your box, which will cover up the tabs and acetate to make a nice, clean inside.
The bottom of the box has two rectangle pieces. Flip your box over and glue the larger of the two rectangles to the bottom of the box. Then, glue the slightly smaller rectangle to the inside bottom of the box to hide the tabs. This makes it look nice and adds stability. Now your box base is done! I love how sturdy this feels!
Now, focus on the lid of the box. Fold the score lines on the four pieces. This comes together just like the other half of the box, but is even easier because the front and the back are the same. Glue the 4 “walls” together, then glue the larger rectangle to the top to make the top of the lid, and glue the smaller rectangle to the inside to cover the tabs and reinforce the structure. Add your red mirror scallop pieces to the lid for a festive touch!
Now let’s add some decorations to the box! I am going to start with the rosette. Fold the two rosette strips accordion style and glue the ends together to make a zig-zag ring. Then press the ring flat and bunch it up in the center to create a rosette shape. While holding it in place, hot glue a circle to the back and hold it until it dries. This will be the base of your rosette. Flip it over and glue the layered peppermint piece to the top of the rosette.
Place the lid on the box and glue the remaining green scallop decorative piece directly to the box (underneath the lid), then glue the rosette wherever you like on the box to create a seamless and professional finish. I put mine on the lid so I could hang the cute little tag from it.
If you are using this as a regular gift box, you can stop here! If you want to make the ornament insert, let’s carry on.
Start your insert by assembling the edges of the divider piece. Take the four numbered pieces, fold them along the score lines, and glue them in numerical order end-to-end. Glue the two pieces together that hold the ornaments, and then attach those firmly on the tabs of the side pieces. This will create an open-backed box that looks like this...
The second half of the insert has numbered dots that correspond to each side. Glue the one dot tab to the one dot side, the two dot tab to the two dot side, etc, until you have a rectangle piece with “walls.” This piece recesses down into the box so it does not show from the front. Add glue to the sides and then slide it into the box, making sure the top of the walls of the insert lid line up with the top edges of the insert box. Now your insert is ready to fill with ornaments and slide into your box!
Although it looks like a lot of steps, this came together pretty easily and looks so beautiful! The 100lb. cardstock makes it feel so luxurious!
