One of my most favorite things about the holidays is hosting fun gatherings. Each year we host an Ugly Sweater Party, and this year I have decided to make my own award ribbons! I love how they turned out and I would love to show you how I made them… let's get to work!
Supplies:
-
Cardstock Warehouse cardstock paper:
- Colorplan 100lb: Lockwood Green
- Lessebo Colours 100lb: White & Red Rose
- MirriCard Mirror: Green & Red
-
Adhesives:
- Liquid Glue
- Hot Glue Gun
- Foam Dots
- Flat Back Safety Pin
- Electronic Cutting Machine
- Cricut Design Space Files
I started by choosing my cut files. I used these images from Cricut Design Space, but if you don’t have a Cricut, you can search your machine’s software for award ribbon, rosette, circle, and ugly sweater to build your own.
Once I had my files the way I liked them, I cut my pieces in the colors listed above. I love the little pops of mirror paper in this project!
To start assembling the award ribbon, take the 2 ribbon pieces and glue the top piece onto the bottom piece. I like to glue just the top circle section onto the bottom piece. I don’t glue the bottom hanging “ribbon” parts together because it gives it movement like a real ribbon. Take the two scored strips and accordion fold them back and forth until you have two fully folded strips. They should look like this when you are done.
Glue the ends of the two strips together to make one long strip, then glue the other two ends together so that you have a circle. Make sure your accordions still alternate around the circle. Using both hands, press the top of the circle down and in until you get a flat rosette. You might have to fiddle with it a bit, but it should eventually squash down into a nice rosette.
Keeping your rosette pressed down, use a hot glue gun to apply some glue around the center hole of your rosette and smash the small white circle into the glue, keeping it as centered as you can. A glue gun is perfect for this job as it dries fast, but keep in mind that you need to move quickly once the glue is on. Press the circle down to keep the rosette flat until the hot glue dries. (15-30 seconds)
Now, take the slightly larger red circle and glue it on top of the smaller white circle on the rosette. The smaller circle is meant to keep everything secure, and the larger circle is decorative.
Add hot glue to the back of the rosette and adhere it to the ribbon part of the badge. Try and center it as best you can, but it’s not a big deal if it’s not perfect. The rosette is a little bit bigger than the base, so it will cover it.
Now it's time to make the sweater. I glued the top and middle part of the sweater together with liquid glue in a fine-tip bottle, and then took foam dots and attached it to the bottom offset layer of the sweater. This gives your sweater some nice dimension! Now hot glue the entire sweater into the center of the circle on the badge.
Layer together the two circles for the place number, and then attach those to the bottom section of the ribbon with more foam dots. Finally, hot glue a flat-backed safety pin to the back of the badge. This allows you to pin it on the winner! If you don’t have flat-backed safety pins, you could also attach a long ribbon and they can wear it like a lanyard.
Now you’re ready to give awards for the best, funniest, or truly ugliest sweaters at your holiday party this year! Our family always goes above and beyond with their sweater game, and I am excited to surprise them with these fun awards.
As extra decor for my party, I also created some 3D letters using the same papers. I love displaying 3D letters at my parties, and it’s so fun to customize them to your theme. If you’ve never made 3D letters before, you can check out Erica’s tutorial by clicking HERE.
