Hi everyone! Natasha of @PoliteCreations joining you today to share a lantern ornament that can also be used as a gift tag. The die cut layers make this so easy to put together and the Birch Wood Veneer paper makes it look like a real wood ornament! (Which it is, because the Birch Wood Veneer paper really IS real wood!)
Supplies:
- Cardstock Warehouse cardstock papers:
- Materica 92lb: Cobalt and Acqua
- Birch Wood Veneer
- Silver MirriSparkle Glitter 104lb
- Colorplan White Frost 100lb
- Christmas Ornament SVG Bundle from Creative Fabrica
- Hero Arts Holiday Message Strips Hero Transfers
- Adhesives:
- Foam Squares
- Nuvo Glue Pen
- Gold Foil
- White Gelly Roll Pen
To begin, I cut all of my layers for the lantern ornament using the various cardstocks. You’ll want to use a double-cut or cut-twice setting for the wood veneer since it is a bit thicker. I love that you can die cut this paper and that it is real wood!
Since the Birch layer will be the top layer of the ornament, I cut a snowflake and sentiment from the rub-ons and burnished those onto this layer. You could also decorate this layer with a pen, stamp, stickers, or other embellishments.
With that complete, I moved on to adding foam squares to the back of each layer except the White Frost layer. The white layer will be the back of the lantern. The foam will give each layer dimension so your final ornament looks like a mini shadow box.
Assembling from back to front, I layered Cobalt onto White Frost, Acqua onto Cobalt, Silver onto Acqua, and Birch Wood Veneer on top.
I then used a glue pen and gold foil to add a pop to the top “handle” of the lantern and the flame of the candle. Add the glue and rub the foil down over the area with the shiny side up. Carefully lift and reapply as needed. This is a great way to add foil to projects if you don’t have a foiling machine. You could also cut a second candle layer out of gold metallic paper and cut off the flame and glue it on top of the flame.
To finish, I used a white gelly roll pen to add more detail to the candle drip and flame to make it look a bit more realistic.
I hope you have enjoyed joining me today and that you feel inspired to make your own Christmas ornaments! If you do, tag us on Facebook or Instagram, and use #cardstockwarehouse to be featured in our stories!
Happy Crafting!
